The little stories of my life

Childhood Companions & Pigeon Tracks

This week I’ve been focusing more on taking photos of things that catch my eye rather than a specific style or theme. This has allowed me to focus on training my eye to notice the lighting or composition of the shot.

Childhood Companion – 01/01/2026

The first photo of 2026 was a shot of my childhood teddy lit by a sunrise alarm clock. I noticed this shot as I ran back upstairs to make the bed once Jax (my dog) had decided to get up and couldn’t let the shot pass. This is one of my favourite photos taken this week and I think the black and white adds a discarded feel to the image even though he still sleeps on my bed with me everynight. Taken with Canon EOS 250D and EF 50mm lens.

Adventure Time – 02/01/2026

Day two I decided to experiment with my Instax Mini Evo and some monochrome film. I used the double exposure feature to take a shot of Jax roaming around the garden and then some brambles growing nearby. I’m really enjoying using my Instax and experimenting with all the features and filters and the best part I can take multiple shots and print the best one out so no film gets wasted.

Until Next Time – 03/01/2026

Taking down the Christmas tree and decorations today led to this shot, creating a pile of tree ornaments as I removed them from the tree before safely packaging them away for when they are needed for next Christmas. While I love the colours of this photo, it’s not one I’ll be rushing to frame. The idea in my head for this shot definitely didn’t translate during the execution. Taken with Canon EOS 250D and EF-S 24mm lens.

It’s Like A Jungle In Here – 04/01/2026

Again this is shot that didn’t come off the way I imagined it. It was time to water all the plants in my house and the easiest way to do this is to use the bath so the excess water can drain off. While it still tells a story, I think the execution could be better. Taken with Canon EOS 250D and EF-S 24mm lens.

Follow The Leader – 05/01/2026

Waking up to a bit of snow meant that I had to make the most of it for today’s photo. Unfortunately, I was also at work so couldn’t go out and find a new take on snow photos. However, a couple of pigeons helped me out by leaving their claw print on my decking for me to carefully step around and get a photo. This is another one of my favourite photos taken this week, I’m definitely leaning towards simplicity. Taken with Instax Mini Evo using a black and white filter (not printed out, which is another great feature).

Sleeping Beauty – 06/01/2026

Most of my photos last year were of Jax, he is of course a great subject but I always feel at peace when I watch him sleeping so I couldn’t pass up the chance to take this one. I’m biased but I also think he looks super cute, and again a favourite shot of the week. Taken with Canon EOS 250D and EF 50mm lens.

Chasing The Light – 07/01/2026

For the last day of week one, I spotted the way the midday winter sun was hitting against the fence at the bottom of my garden. I knew if I waited too long it wouldn’t last so jumped up from my desk and headed outside. I wanted to focus to be the light so dropped the exposure slightly to make the shadows darker. This is another of my favourites, I love the feeling black and white photos give. Taken with Instax Mini Evo using a black and white filter and printed on monochrome film.

After reflecting on the first week of Project 365 it’s becoming obvious that my preferred images are black and white rather than colour and I like the simplicity of images where there’s just one thing to focus on. The whole project is about experimenting and finding my style and the things I enjoy taking photos of so lets see what comes of the rest of this month.
